Everyone Has Their Price

As the old adage goes, “everyone has their price” and thanks to a pointer from Joe Patti (a.k.a Butts In The Seats blogmaster), blogs are no exception. In fact, the folks over at the Business Opportunities Weblog Network have an applet they say will tell you exactly how much they think your blog is worth…

my-blog.jpgPersonally, I’m not entirely sold on the parameters they use to estimate a blog’s worth but then again it is still fun to have some validation (even the unverified kind). According to the Business Opportunities Weblog Network, their applet computes and displays a blog’s worth using the same link to dollar ratio as the AOL-Weblogs Inc deal (more details here).

As such, I took five minutes to punch in some blogs that were at the top of my head to find out just how much the Business Opportunities Weblog Network estimates their value and here’s what I found out:

  1. http://www.artsjournal..com/aboutlastnight = $215,654.28
  2. http://www.therestisnoise.com = $211,702.50
  3. http://www.sequenza21.com = $122,505.18
  4. http://www.ionarts.blogspot.com = $81,858.30
  5. http://www.artsjournal.com/postclassic = $72,825.66
  6. http://www.artsjournal.com/artfulmanager = $57,018.54
  7. http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides = $45,163.20
  8. http://www.artsjournal.com/adaptistration = $ 42,905.04*
  9. http://www.jasonheath.blogspot.com = $37,259.64
  10. http://www.deceptivelysimple.typepad.com = $34,436.94
  11. http://www.oboeinsight.com = $38,388.72
  12. http://www.irontongue.blogspot.com = $33,307.86
  13. http://www.artsjournal.com/herman = $22,581.60
  14. http://www.chicagoclassicalmusic.org = $22,017.06
  15. http://www.buttsseats.com = $12,984.42
  16. http://www.artsjournal.com/riley = $10,726.26
  17. http://www.briansacawa.com/blog = $7,903.56
  18. http://www.slso.org/blog = $4,516.32
  19. http://csobassblog.blogspot.com = $564.54

All fun and games aside, something is only worth as much as people will pay for it (or in this business, how much they are willing to subsidize it, fund it, and contribute to it). So if anyone would like to pony up $50,000 for this blog, feel free to send me an email. In the meantime, I’ll just keep posting.

*41,211.42 for artsjournal.com/adaptistration and $1,693.62 for adaptistration.com, which redirects to the former URL.

About Drew McManus

"I hear that every time you show up to work with an orchestra, people get fired." Those were the first words out of an executive's mouth after her board chair introduced us. That executive is now a dear colleague and friend but the day that consulting contract began with her orchestra, she was convinced I was a hatchet-man brought in by the board to clean house.

I understand where the trepidation comes from as a great deal of my consulting and technology provider work for arts organizations involves due diligence, separating fact from fiction, interpreting spin, as well as performance review and oversight. So yes, sometimes that work results in one or two individuals "aggressively embracing career change" but far more often than not, it reinforces and clarifies exactly what works and why.

In short, it doesn't matter if you know where all the bodies are buried if you can't keep your own clients out of the ground, and I'm fortunate enough to say that for more than 15 years, I've done exactly that for groups of all budget size from Qatar to Kathmandu.

For fun, I write a daily blog about the orchestra business, provide a platform for arts insiders to speak their mind, keep track of what people in this business get paid, help write a satirical cartoon about orchestra life, hack the arts, and love a good coffee drink.

Thanks for the fun post! I am tickled that ccm.org has a value of over $22,000! Now if we can only get ahead of Deceptively Simple….
