It’s Black Friday

In the spirit of frenzied spending, Adaptistration is offering its own one day only Black Friday sale: 40% off an Orchestra Website Review subscription at Adaptistration Premium. You can help yourself to this massive discount by visiting the secret discount page (sorry, the promotion has expired).

Speaking of Black Friday sales, even though I’m on dozens of orchestra mailing lists, I didn’t receive a single Black Friday promotion from an orchestra among the flood of promotional emails this morning…

I’ve always encouraged clients to bump revenue up by offering a one day only Black Friday ticket sale. For groups that offer online subscription sales, it is a great way to generate some last minute sales by packaging remaining subscription concerts into special packages. Likewise, for groups that track single ticket sales, it’s a good opportunity to offer repeat buyers a special offer.

At the very least, using Black Friday to offer a 24-hour sales on sluggish concert events is a no-brainer. If anyone out there is offering a Black Friday sale, send me a note and let me know about the offer and how you put it together.

About Drew McManus

"I hear that every time you show up to work with an orchestra, people get fired." Those were the first words out of an executive's mouth after her board chair introduced us. That executive is now a dear colleague and friend but the day that consulting contract began with her orchestra, she was convinced I was a hatchet-man brought in by the board to clean house.

I understand where the trepidation comes from as a great deal of my consulting and technology provider work for arts organizations involves due diligence, separating fact from fiction, interpreting spin, as well as performance review and oversight. So yes, sometimes that work results in one or two individuals "aggressively embracing career change" but far more often than not, it reinforces and clarifies exactly what works and why.

In short, it doesn't matter if you know where all the bodies are buried if you can't keep your own clients out of the ground, and I'm fortunate enough to say that for more than 15 years, I've done exactly that for groups of all budget size from Qatar to Kathmandu.

For fun, I write a daily blog about the orchestra business, provide a platform for arts insiders to speak their mind, keep track of what people in this business get paid, help write a satirical cartoon about orchestra life, hack the arts, and love a good coffee drink.

  1. At the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, we are hosting a Black Friday sale for Handel’s Messiah through Ticketmaster’s nationwide Black Friday sale, Tix the Season. (Our hall is a Tessitura venue, but Messiah takes place at another venue in town which is sold through Ticketmaster.)

We’re offering 25% off all tickets to Messiah from Friday through Monday. Last year’s performance sold out, and we are tracking well compared to last year, but with the economy this year we did not want to take any chances. This four-day sale is likely the only discount we will make available.

We are promoting the deal on our website and social media. The venue also sent out the deal in an email to their patrons on Friday. And it’s posted on Ticketmaster, of course. (Ideally, I would have used some of our print advertising running this weekend to push this deal, but it came together too late to make it happen.)
